Keeping Wrinkles At Bay

September 1 marks a month to my next birthday, that annual event marking the passage of time and the appearance of another wrinkle (or laugh line). To counteract the negativity associated with aging, I have decided to look to desserts for the answer.

Beginning tomorrow, Bon Vivant will feature a dessert a day for the whole month of September. Yup, that’s 30 desserts for my 30th birthday. It isn’t an overly excessive way to mark the years is it? After all, desserts are meant to be enjoyed in the company of friends, and with each bite, engulf you in a state of bliss and overall sense of well-being.

Why the inspiration, you might ask. After all, age is just a number, if anything at all. According to the US Census, middle age doesn’t officially begin until you hit 35, so I technically have 5 more years before I can warmly welcome ‘nanna naps, gravity and neurofen plus’ as mainstays, as one of my friends observed on her 30th birthday recently.

It probably comes from the twinge of nostalgia as I look back at my 20s, those amazing years of giddy happiness and endless adventures when I fearlessly entered the big wide world all puffed up with the optimism and energy to ‘change the world’. Nine years on, and after some painful lessons about love, friendship and the politics of the modern workplace which have tempered that zeal to more realistic expectations, I’ve learnt that it’s far better to celebrate the memories and anticipate future joys than dread the inevitable passage of time.

And I’m sure you’ll agree that there’s nothing that screams Celebrate in true molecular form more than a silky smooth panna cotta, a wave of luscious chocolate ganache springing forth from a lava cake, or the soft crunch of a delectable macaron.

So if you’ve ever experienced that jolt of reality that comes with each birthday, itching to get out and live life to the fullest before it’s too late, or the sensual satisfaction from a well-made dessert, this is for you. Stay tuned!

Is there a dessert that has a special place in your memory which you’d like to see recreated? Leave me a comment and I’ll include it in the roster of desserts!

  5. When I was your age I used to think that 35 was middle age. However, now that I’m approaching twice your age, I have a word of wisdom for you. Thirty five is only middle age IF you only hope to live to 70 (half of 70 is 35, right?) Well, since I hope to live to 120, middle age won’t be until I’m 60, right? lol……..anyway, that is my story and I’m sticking to it. I found your web page link over on Phamfatale and I am enjoying looking through your recipes. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!
